When it comes time to relocate your business or family, you should be aware of the clear and present risks involved with choosing a moving company. These risks are always out there, so it’s critical that you’re aware of them so you can do everything in your power to avoid them. Just to be clear, not every moving company out there is crooked or trying to screw people over. In fact, there are plenty of grade A moving services out there, waiting to move your belongings.

I would like to share the experience and knowledge gained after consulting with them and hiring them to move and pack my home. Regardless of if you’re moving your home or office, they laid things out very simply for me and anyone to understand.

  1. Not all moving companies are created equal. There are a lot of fly by night companies so be VERY wary of companies asking for a large initial deposit. A professional moving company won’t typically ask for a large deposit upfront. The average in this industry is around 30% upfront so avoid any company who is asking for more or make sure you question them further.
  2. Validate credentials. In today’s day and age, it’s far too easy for a brand new company to forge local validation from others. Everything from fake reviews to fake awards, Able Moving has seen it all. So just be careful about believing anything and everything a moving company says. There are a lot of companies who look great on the front, but there is no foundation or infrastructure to support them or their claims!
  3. Ask for proper licensing, insurance, and certifications. A true professional moving company will be able to provide you with all of that useful information without batting an eye. A company who tried to avoid sharing this information is an enormous red flag. Be persistent and clear, credentials are a MUST if you want to touch our property.
  4. Seek out past customers. The easiest way to find out if a prospective moving company is a big fat scam is to seek out those customers who have worked with them in the past. Usually, reviews are extremely easy to find and in most cases, are right on the moving companies website. Be sure to read through them thoroughly and even potential reach out to a few. Like we’ve mentioned earlier, it’s not all that difficult to fake a “real review”. Don’t be tricked into hiring a company that isn’t nearly qualified to touch your valuables.
  5. Request a tour of their facilities. Once you see a moving company’s place of business and where their storage is, it’s usually a good sign that they are in fact a legitimate moving service. A lot of unqualified movers and scammers will be quite dodgy about showing you their place of business/storage space. If their office space is impossible to find online, this is another red flag that I would personally avoid.

It all comes down to due diligence. Leave yourself plenty of time to pack and plan out your move because these unqualified companies prey on those in rushed situations where it might be difficult to ask all of the proper qualifying questions.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of solid and reputable companies who want to earn your business but at the same time, there are a lot of companies acting like strong businesses. The fact of the matter is, if you follow what was outlined above, it will be nearly impossible for you to fall victim to a moving scam near you.

Before getting to your contract, you should as all the questions and raise all your concerns to the professional movers. Get to understand every detail you need before hiring the company. Once you’ve hired the moving service, it’s time to check the paperwork or contract to be sure what’s contained in it. Recheck the inventory sheet to make sure all your valuables have been delivered to your destination. If there are items that were left behind or are missing, wait until the item is found before signing the inventory sheet.
